John Wayne Illustrated

It began with a sketch.

Refined drawing on the board, ready to begin the painting. The drawing is a combination of graphite and colored pencil. I’ve included an indication of light and shadow.

Background underpainting is laid in in several textural washes of transparent watercolor.

The lettering is added with graphite pencil.

The background is developed further in watercolor and gouache.

Further development. The underpainting is being overlaid by a full range of color. At this point I still have not touched the actual likeness.

The shirt collar,  hair and flesh tones are laid in.

The planes of the face and hair are indicated.

Continued development focuses on the likeness.

The finished illustration in watercolor, gouache and colored pencil.
